Core Finance
Mondays (with some Sundays) at 7:00 PM CST
January 24 - May 2
Cost: $900
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER TAKING THIS CLASS?
This class is intended to teach you some of the basics of finance. It is perfect for the following people:
1. You are going to attend business school and you have no background in finance (it will help you to narrow the gap with students who have studied business undergrad).
2. You have never studied finance and you find it frustrating that you don’t know how a bond works or how we think about stock valuation or how to do the math to calculate how much money you need to retire.
3. You feel disadvantaged at work because you have limited finance knowledge.
WHAT WILL WE BE STUDYING?
We will be studying some of the core concepts that we teach in a first-semester finance class (in business school). Topics include:
Time value of money – this is the basic math of finance. (~4 classes)
Amortizing loans and bonds (~2 classes)
The dividend discount model (~1 class)
Introduction to capital budgeting – NPV, IRR, and other methodologies (~1 class)
Introduction to financial statements – understanding the difference between the balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statement (~2 classes)
Capital budgeting – how we decide whether to do a project (~2 classes)
The free-cash-flow-to equity valuation model – how to understand a stock price (~2 classes)
We will NOT be covering some of the more academic subjects such as modern portfolio theory.
HOW WILL CLASS WORK?
This will be a typical lecture with plenty of time for Q&A. In addition, after we learn something, you will do a problem to ensure that you know it. Every so often, there will be a problem to work before the next class. You will also be given loads of problems that you can use to practice on your own (and you will also be given answers).
PLEASE NOTE:
1. This class is intended to be educational. Nothing should be construed as investment advice.
2. It is always possible that one of the live classes will have to be offered as a taped lecture (rather than live). While this has never happened in the past, it is always possible that I could be sick or an emergency could arise.
